Ah, that time of the year again. Time to yawn, stretch, and come out of cold bitter painting hibernation. The Do-All Art Clash is the event that really kicks off the warm months of painting ahead for me. The concept is simple, you get 3 hours to make some kind of art. When 3 hours are up, your painting is auctioned and judged. Easy-peasy. This is my 5th year doing it, and it is always an enjoyable time.
I have been burned in the past from spending too much on my canvas, or materials, and not recouping the cost of the painting in the auction. This year I used a found door to paint on! Perfect, I got my materials for next to nothing! I just gessoed it up, and put some hanging hardware in it. And badda-bing!
For the actual painting I didn’t plan what it might be, but I knew I just wanted to keep the paint energetic and see where it went from there. I was surrounded by 3 huge sources of energy this year (Mark Piotrowski & his daughter Raven and Sean Gallagher). So the atmosphere was perfectly creative in every way. The painting grew from some abstract color, to a crude finger painting, and back to a swirly abstract. Nothing like what I imagined, but perfectly great for me.
I was very pleased with how it turned out this year. It now lives with the winner of the silent auction. Though, it did not place in the top 10 this year. A lot of great competition this year!
If you have never been to the Do-All Art Clash, I would highly recommend it, either as an artist or a guest! The food is great, the atmosphere is wonderful! Best of all you can go home with some very affordable and very kick-ass artwork!
